Abstract

Carbon/carbon composites are a new biomaterial known for its excellent biocompatibility and elasticity modulus similar to that of human bones. However, carbon particle desquamation always occurs on the surface of this material and causes the "Black Skin Effect". In order to solve this problem, many types of biomedical coatings were prepared. This paper reviews the researches on this field in recent years, analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of the coatings, and presents the essential features of good biomedical coatings on Carbon/Carbon composites as well as the further works that should be carried out. © Freund Publishing House Ltd.
