Abstract

MEBSP is the acronym for a pan-European research effort undertaken to develop means of microstructure control by solidification processing. The mega-project gathered together eight industries, six research centers, and six universities for four years in a network spanning Europe from Finland to Spain. The article summarizes the results from MEBSP's four sub-topics: "nucleation and grain refinement", "solidification and microsegregation", "thermophysical data", and "thermal stresses and strains during solidification".
