Abstract
Information and communication technology (ICT) have evolved in today's computing society whose waste causes environmental impacts and compromises sustainability. The objective of this research was to investigate the evolution of communication and information technology about it, and the environmental impacts this has caused on environmental sustainability. The method used was that of bibliographic research with quantitative and qualitative coverage. The past data were obtained from open access electronic links: Coordination of Research Improvement and Studies in Higher Education, Google Scholar, Science Direct and Scientific Periodicals Electronic Library. The temporal cut-off for such obtainment was from 2005 to 2019. The data obtained and analyzed indicated that: (1) the evolution of Information Technology occurred because communication feedback needed to be more effective; (2) ICT is applied in several sectors such as education (n = 47.61%), health (n= 14.31%), economy (n = 18.75%); environmental impacts are diverse and originated by the generation (n = 13.04%) and inadequate disposal of waste electrical and electronic equipment (n = 31.50%). Therefore, these impacts compromise the environmental sustainability since the data obtained indicated that only one (n = 1.36%) local with the use of (TIC), develops an appropriate management for WEEE's.
