Abstract

Conductive hydrogels are gaining attention as a new generation of smart materials that bring together the softness and water content of traditional hydrogels with the electrical capabilities needed for modern electronic technologies. Due to their natural flexibility, compatibility with biological systems, and ability to stay conductive even when stretched or bent, these materials are especially promising for future wearable electronics, health-monitoring devices, and energy-related applications. In this review, we take a closer look at how conductive hydrogels are designed and made, and how their unique properties are being used. We start by breaking down the main types of hydrogel structures, such as single-network, double-network, and hybrid composites, and explore the different ways conductivity can be introduced, whether through polymers, carbon-based materials, or metal-based additives. We then dive into the wide range of real-world uses for these materials, from flexible batteries and motion-powered generators to touch panels and biointegrated sensors. Finally, we conclude by outlining key future directions and offering insights into how interdisciplinary approaches may accelerate the translation of conductive hydrogel technologies from lab-scale innovation to real-world impact.
