Carcinoma arising from areas of intestinal metaplasia in the gastric mucosa

Abstract

1. Five examples of gastric carcinoma have been described which appear to be arising from epithelium of intestinal type. 2. Evidence has been considered which suggests that about 30 per cent of gastric carcinomas arise from areas of intestinal metaplasia in the gastric mnucosa. 3. The significance of this in relationship to the increased incidence of gastric carcinoma in patients with pernicious anaemia has been discussed. I am indebted to Professor R. W. Scarff, Professor H.
