Abstract

The rate of progression of the demineralization front during acid demineralization is investigated for standardized elephant's ivory dentine specimens. A theoretical model for the penetration based upon a combined diffusion with reaction process is set up. The results are in accordance with the proposed model. For specimens of certain geometrical shapes (semi infinite or plane sheet) the distance penetrated by the front is directly proportional to the square root of the time.
