Abstract

Background: The growing pressure for sustainable practices has driven organizations to adopt environmental strategies. In this context, the theory of Dynamic Capabilities (DCs) offers a theoretical framework to understand how companies can adapt to environmental changes and develop sustainable strategies. This essay is based on the premise that dynamic capabilities support the development of the environmental aspect and can be built by organizations. The research has a theoretical foundation, using a literature review conducted through platforms such as Web of Science and Scopus (2018–2023). Materials and Methods: This is a theoretical essay with a qualitative and exploratory approach. Aliterature review was carried out using scientific databases to identify the dynamic capabilities that promote the development of the environmental aspect. The study is structured around the dimensions proposed by Teece (2007): environmental sensing, resource seizing, and resource reconfiguring. Results: The main dynamic capabilities associated with the environmental aspect are: Environmental sensing capability: enables the identification of trends and anticipation of regulatory and societal changes related to sustainability; Resource seizing capability: facilitates the use of internal and external knowledge to promote sustainable practices; Resource reconfiguring capability: allows the modification of processes and organizational structures to align with environmental requirements. Companies that develop these capabilities are better equipped to innovate, adapt to environmental demands, and achieve sustainable competitive advantage. The study proposes a framework that synthesizes these relationships and demonstrates how such capabilities contribute to the transformation of resources into environmental performance. Conclusion: Dynamic capabilities represent an essential strategic approach for the environmental development of organizations. Their development requires top management commitment, an organizational culture focused on sustainability, and knowledge integration. The continuous enhancement of these capabilities allows companies to respond to environmental changes, strengthen their reputation, and gain a sustainable competitive advantage. As a theoretical contribution, the essay offers a conceptual synthesis of the required capabilities and their practical applicability, guiding organizations in the pursuit of greener and more effective strategies
