WOUND IRRIGATION

Abstract

There are different challenges in the course of a surgery treatment. These go from the type of surgical procedure until the adequate close of the incision. In this scenario, the wound needs an environment that gives the best or almost the best conditions for normal healing. In such conditions, to avoid surgical site infection (SSI) at the time of the surgery or later and to keep clean the wound is one of the main factors to achieve a good environment with the sequence of hormonal activation and inflammatory response, stimulating the regeneration of the tissue with a properly closure. In this chapter, we will talk about the wound irrigation, the different type of solutions to do it, which one is more effective and why in our opinion, and which is the actual consensus about this practice. There are several opinions and different experiences around the world, sometimes more supported by evidence and other not so much.
