Abstract

To synthesize a novel purple zirconia ceramic, Nd2O3 was introduced as a colorant to improve the mechanical properties and color properties of purple ceramics. It was found that causes the color and mechanical properties to obey different rules. With increases Nd2O3, the color of purple zirconia ceramics is gradually deepened, corresponding and the negative influence on hardness. In this case, the optimal comprehensive properties of zirconia ceramics can be found at the 4 mol% Nd−2.5YSZ, at which purple zirconia ceramics with an even, continuously adjustable color and positive high-temperature stability can be obtained and used as a new type of environmentally friendly colorful ceramics. Based on their good mechanical and optical properties, these purple ceramics can be widely used in high-tech fields such as mobile phone backplanes, optoelectronics and high-end decorative materials.
