A critical reading of George Tarabichi's book “Min Islam Al-Quran Ila Islam Al-Hadith”

Abstract

The well-known Syrian thinker and translator, George Tarabichi, presented a new perspective on Islamic heritage in his book "Min Islam Al-Quran Ila Islam Al-Hadith." In his original perspective, Tarabichi questioned many Islamic beliefs, such as the legislative role of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), the status of his traditions (Hadith), and the authenticity of their attribution to him. Moreover, Professor Tarabichi followed a general skeptical approach towards the Prophetic tradition (Sunnah), using terms like fabrication, lying, and invention to describe the Prophetic sayings regardless of their strength. He employed scientific and historical logic in his assessment. The study follows Professor Tarabichi’s book "Min Islam Al-Quran Ila Islam Al-Hadith", providing a focused examination of the level of accuracy and objectivity present or absent in his engagement with Islamic heritage, particularly the Prophetic Sunnah.
