Abstract

In this book the underlying theory of wave-equation modelling and migration techniques is treated. In the first four chapters relevant basic theory is presented. Much attention is paid to 2-D spectral analysis (chapter 3) to enable a good discussion on the wavenumber-frequency methods in chapter 8. Wave-equation modelling techniques (forward extrapolation of wave fields) is discussed in chapters 5 and 6. Different techniques are compared with each other. Inverse extrapolation is introduced as a spatial deconvolution process (chapter 7). A complex-valued least-squares technique is discussed to compute optimum inverse extrapolation operators. The influence of seismic patterns and noise on the optimum result is evaluated. A method is proposed how angle-dependent reflection coefficients can be estimated from imaged results. In chapters 8, 9 and 10 the three different migration techniques are discussed in detail (wavenumber-frequency, summation, finite-difference). Much attention is paid to a comparison between the three methods (chapter 11). Finally, in chapter 12 a discussion is given on limits of spatial resolution.-after Authors
