Abstract

The Southern Cross Model (SCM) is a distinctive new academic model that has reformed the delivery of curricula at Southern Cross University with its immersive and more focused unit structure and its active, learning-centred approach. Recent studies show that well-designed immersive academic models can be equally, if not more, effective than the more traditional semester-long models. Preliminary feedback from students in the SCM is mostly positive; however, there is currently limited research into the overall learning experience of international students in immersive academic models. This study, which is the first stage of a larger study, explores the learning experience of international students in the SCM through semi-guided interviews. It reveals students' perceptions of its benefits and challenges. It also provides insight into how students manage the study demands in the new academic model and how they balance this with work and other life activities. Impacts on wellbeing are also explored. The semi-guided interviews of international students offer rich detail on their perspective. This understanding will help Southern Cross University and other institutions considering moving to a similar delivery model provide timely and targeted support to international students so they can thrive in their studies.
