Abstract
Polymeric based (plastic) materials have been increasingly used in almost all areas of daily life since 1950's. Polypropylene (PP) is one of the widely used thermoplastic polymers in the polyolefin group. The products obtained from PP have a wide application area ranging from packaging industry, automotive applications, electricity and electronics industries and constructions. PP is also used widely in the textile industry. PP is an increasingly used plastic, because of its advantages such as low cost, light weight, high mechanical strength and high chemical resistance. In addition, in many areas where polypropylene is used, flammability is an important factor. Since PP exhibits high flammability, it finds applications after modified with various flame retardants. In this study, the flame retardants of PP were examined and the state-of-art developments and future expectations were addressed. Flame retardant materials are grouped as halogens, intumescent systems, phosphorus compounds, metal hydroxides, nano materials and silicones.
