Abstract

Background: Pelvic joint dysfunctions are one of the most common causes of work absenteeism worldwide. In addition to musculoskeletal, visceral complaints of the pelvic organs may occur. This article deals with the current state of knowledge on the functional anatomy of the pelvis, describes some typical complaints from a gynaecological-/obstetrical point of view and mentions a manual method for sustainable relief of complaints. Objectives: Which visceral symptoms are related to pelvic joint dysfunctions? What might a manual method that contributes to sustainable reduction of complaints and improvement of quality of life look like? Methods: The current state of knowledge of the functional anatomy of the pelvis is presented with the corresponding symptoms of pelvic joint dysfunction. In addition to musculoskeletal problems, the article focuses on visceral problems such as premature contractions, birth problems, dysmenorrhea, constipation, urinary urgency, dyspareunia and fertility problems. Results: Reduction of discomfort, improvement of quality of life and improved pelvic organ function after manual therapy and stabilization of the pelvic ring are observed in both individual case reports and in the clientele of the primary care practice overall. Conclusions: The pelvis is a key region for manual medicine. A wide variety of complaints can be significantly reduced by manual treatment.
