Abstract

Plant cells are encased in a cell wall that acts as an interface between the external environment and the internal cell. The cell wall can be modifed by external perturbation and internal signals, but it remains largely unknown how these alterations infuence cellular processes. LoRicco et al. (2025) used high-resolution microscopy in the alga Penium margaritaceum to study how altering cell wall structure impacts cellular morphology. Modifying the cell wall impacted cell shape, size, and organelle distribution. Ultimately, this study hints at a connection between properties of algal cell walls and cell growth.
