Abstract

The synthesis of colloidal nanocomposites via the free radical polymerization of vinyl monomers in the presence of ultrafine silica sol was investigated. A strong acid-base interaction between the polymer and the silica sol was a pre-requisite for nanocomposite formation. The potential applications of the nanocomposite particles include catalyst supports, novel marker particles in immunodiagnostic assays, and abrasion-resistant coatings.
