Abstract

EVA-MMA, AH26, Super-Bond and zinc oxide and eugenol were examined by a permeability test for their sealing ability as root canal filling material. EVA, AH26, and Super-Bond had a better sealing ability than zinc oxide and eugenol. In the SEM observation, the EVA-MMA composite showed the best physical property to adapt on the root canal wall. In vivo tests consisted of implantation of EVA-MMA, Kurepeet (KP) and hydroxyapatite (HAP) into monkey tooth sockets and subcutaneous implantation of EVA-MMA, KP and poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) into rat. In monkey, KP showed slight irritation to the periapical tissue at the 4th week. No inflammation reaction was evidenced with EVA-MMA, KP and HAP at the 8th week. In rat, EVA-MMA and KP showed tissue reaction comparable to the control PMMA sample at the 1st and 4th week. The in vivo and in vitro tests suggest that the EVA-MMA composite is the most promising root canal sealer. Incoporation of HAP and ZrO2 promote the biocompatibility and X-ray opacity of the composite. © 1986, The Japanese Society for Dental Materials and Devices. All rights reserved.
