Abstract
The present study compares Rhineriesling wines of different vintages and climatic regions in South Africa, Germany and northern Italy in terms of monoterpene concentrations. The application of canonical discriminant analysis on the concentrations of only 6 compounds, which are known to be climate dependent, permitted the prediction of origin. 1,1,6-trimethyl-1,2-dihydronaphthalene with its kerosene-like aroma is responsible for aged bouquet differences in Riesling wines from warm to those from cool regions.
