Abstract
A review, with 32 refs., on salt-dependent changes in membrane lipid compn. of halotolerant, moderately halophilic, and extremely halohilic bacteria. The biosynthetic and regulatory mechanisms underlying the obsd. changes are discussed. Possible implications for the evolution of extreme halophiles and other archaebacteria are also discussed.
