Abstract
This paper describes the added mass effects acting on a disc vibrating in fluid. This investigation was carried out to derive a simple approximate formulation for calculating natural frequencies of a disc oscillating in a fluid-filled cylindrical case. In the theoretical model, the disc is considered as an annular plate which has very small width compared with its radius. It is assumed that differentials in the radius direction are negligible and that there is no fluid flow in the gap between the disc and the cylindrical case. Only diametral modes are discussed. Experimental investigations were conducted to compare with formulation results. It was confirmed that the approximate formulation is useful to estimate natural frequencies of a disc in fluid. © 1984, The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers. All rights reserved.
