Abstract

The use of preservative CCA (Chromated Copper Arsenate) has been questioned due to the impact mainly related to the dispersion of copper and arsenic to the environment prior to its complete fixation in timber. Another issue is related to the inappropriate disposal of wastes from treated wood, which may cause leaching due to the increased area susceptible to these wastes. This study aimed the particleboard production, evaluating the effect of adding waste from CCA-treated Pinus sp., in association with the same specie without preservative, in addition to variations in content of castor oil-based polyurethane resin. Particleboards properties were determined according to NBR 14810-3: 2006. By statistical analysis, it was observed that the addition of treated wood resulted in better performance in the thickness swelling (2 hours), whereas this treated wood used the same proportion as the timber without preservatives was significant in internal bond, showing the better values. The modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity were not influenced by variations in raw-materials used in particleboards production. Most of the panels were in accordance to the main requirements, showing feasibility of using these materials in their production, as well as obtaining a product with considerable environmental appeal.
