Abstract

SUMMARY Current treatment of acute stroke consists of several methods of proven efficacy. Time from the onset of symptoms as a crucial part of medical history remains the basic determinant for treatment, although scientific and technological advances enable rapid identification of patients who might benefit from treatment beyond the usual time window. Neuroimaging is therefore an extremely important part of initial workup and treatment. Advances in treatment are followed by extensive research of organization models for optimal availability of current treatment of stroke, resulting in recognizing hospitals according to level of stroke treatment availability, better outcome controls, and in the end better treatment of acute stroke.
