Abstract

This article is the author's attempt to understand the layout design of the contents of picture story books for children. Initially the author focused on content layout design only. The focus is in terms of arranging text with images. Apparently, from several picture story books for children that the author has come across, there are fundamental factors that factor into why the size and layout of the contents of picture story books for children are designed in such a way. The authors found arguments for this important point during unstructured interviews with children's book observers. On the other hand, in this paper the term role is used to replace the term function in graphic design terminology, especially the role of designing picture story books for children. The term role is used to provide a spectrum of understanding of the more entertaining side of design and carrying out something for its users and usually something that has a social dimension. This research sample was purposive, analyzed them by looking for the relationship between images, writing and the role of both and by paying attention to the grading of children's books. The conclusion obtained is that the role is an important element in designing children's books, including the size and layout of the contents. The relationship between the two authors appears in the comparison table of book sizes and roles.
