2022 FIFA World Cup Goal Map: Trends and Predictions Based on Match Performance Data

Abstract

Background and Study Aim. The Football World Cup provides a unique platform to examine performance attributes distinguishing winning teams from losing ones. With football’s evolving dynamics, understanding key metrics influencing success is crucial for tactical planning and player development. This study aimed to analyse the relationship between various performance indicators and goal-scoring outcomes of the FIFA World Cup 2022, held in Qatar, focusing on attacking efficiency, defensive resilience, passing accuracy, set plays, and tactical formations to provide key information to the participants team of 2026 World Cup. Material and methods. Data from 54 matches, excluding 10 matches, were sourced from FIFA’s official records. Statistical tools including descriptive statistics, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and Paired Samples T-Test were used to evaluate differences between winning and losing teams. Results. Winning teams scored 125 out of 172 goals, showcasing superior goal-scoring efficiency. Notably, 25% of goals were scored during the final phase, emphasizing the importance of endurance and tactical execution. Significant factors influencing match outcomes included total goals (p<0.001, d=1.340), goals from inside the penalty area (p < 0.001, d=1.170), attempts on target (p<0.001, d=0.486), entries into the penalty area (p=0.023, d=0.318), and forced turnovers (p=0.003, d=0.421). Contrary to common belief, ball possession was not a direct predictor of scoring success, emphasizing the impact of transition play and set-piece execution. The 4-3-3 formation, used by 55.56% of winning teams, proved most effective, offering balanced play, effective pressing, and offensive versatility. Conclusions. The study highlights the vital role of performance metrics in modern football including frequent attacking approaches towards goal, team formation and players' skill and their tactical application offering valuable insights for coaches, analysts, and player development.
