Abstract
This work analyses the impacts of characteristics of students, teachers, classes, headmasters and schools on 4th grade student's outcomes in Mathematics with the use of two school's panel data sets built from SAEB 1997-2005. It is the first time that a panel of schools with disaggregated data at student level is used to explore this theme in the Brazilian case. The family background showed up to be very important for explaining achievement, whereas few school's variables had some effect. The analysis also indicate that explainable variables have differentiated impact on learning depending if the school is public or private.
