The body helps to think totality. It refers, on the one hand, to a whole with differentiated and specialized parts which is more than their sum; on the other hand, to an internal finality; and last, to a permanence of identity through time in spite of changes by self-regeneration. We explore here the multiple metaphors to which it thus gives rise and we question this metaphorical language of the organism.
