Abstract

Background: DJ-1 is associated with recessive early onset Parkinson disease. Results: DJ-1 acts as a metal-binding protein, binding copper and mercury, and DJ-1, but not mutated clinical variants, protects cells against metal-induced cytotoxicity. Conclusion: Small genetic alterations in a central Parkinson disease protein can sensitize cells to metal-induced cell death. Significance: Genetic alterations in DJ-1 can sensitize cells to metal-induced cell death in Parkinson disease. © 2013 by The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Inc.
