Abstract

Synthetic biology has revolutionized the creation of microbial cell factories for the efficient production of value-added chemicals and materials from renewable resources. The rational design of these factories is based on the ability to precisely regulate the expression of multiple genes, enabling the programming of cells to exhibit desired behaviors. Tools for modulating gene expression facilitates the construction of intricate genetic circuits and complex metabolic pathways optimized for the efficient production of target chemicals and materials. In this review, we delve into recent synthetic biology tools and strategies that are used to efficiently control transcription, translation, as well as other gene expression-related processes. Representative examples emphasizing their practical applications are also illustrated. Additionally, we discuss future perspectives on the development and application of gene expression modulation tools, envisioning their pivotal role towards fostering a more sustainable bio-based economy.
