Abstract

Social capital has a significant impact on status attainment which does not duplicate the well known effects of other forms of capital. All things being equal, the type of personal network mobilized to find a job is (in France according to the INSEE Labor force survey) likely to alter the standard relation between level of education and occupational status. For those looking for a job, recourse to network is more common nowadays than thirty years ago. Other data show that social confidence grew over the last twenty years in the US as in most European countries. The same holds true for social participation. Thus, social capital plays a specific role and its importance has rather increased.
