Abstract

The accelerated urbanization process, combined with the lack of urban land planning, causes serious social, environmental and economic impacts on cities. The drainage systems are affected by the waterproofing of the soil, which reduces infiltration and increases the volume of runoff, intensifying urban flooding. In this sense, the objective of this article is to propose a methodology, based on products from remote sensing, capable of spatially identifying priority areas for interventions and which have characteristics that enable the implementation of Low Impact Urban Development techniques. The methodology initially consisted of research and data collection, referring to the areas most susceptible to flooding and the population density of the neighborhood Bodocongó, in Campina Grande-PB. Then, with the aid of the QGIS software, a map was produced with the regions that simultaneously present these two characteristics, indicating the degree of priority for intervention actions. Based on the analysis of this product, three priority areas were chosen to study the feasibility of applying bio-retention systems and infiltration trenches, taking into account the slope of the terrain and the type of soil. The methodology proved to be effective, serving as a subsidy for selecting priority regions, in a simple and direct way, which can be easily expanded to other locations and used as an important tool for urban managers in decision making.
