Abstract
Heavy investment by the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority in an underground and surface rail network, Metro Rail, is generating tunnelling and construction work for consultants and contractors. Details of the system, the tunnelling work involved and allowances made for possible seismic activity are presented. A further hazard which had to be taken into account was possible gas infiltration from an abandoned oilfield on an underground rail route. (D.W.Taylor)
