Abstract

At the San Guillermo National Park and Reserve occur 18 species of native and 3 species of exotic mammals. Among the native mammals, we found evidence that the Ctenomys species that occur in the protected area, previously assigned to Ctenomys fulvus, is probably a new species related with the Ctenomys mendocinus group. We found a high occurrence of non native species, such as the European hare (Lepus europaeus) and cattle (Bos taurus). In fact, the occurrence of the European hare reached 11% but in same sites this was the most abundant species. We highlight the necessity of information on basic biology of mammal species and carry out study on the effects of any constructions on mammals in order to guarantee the conservation of biota and biological process in this protected area.
