Abstract

A small amount of boron was added to Ni60Pd20P 20 and Ni65Pd15P20 alloys. The alloys containing 3 at% boron showed improved thermal stability and glass-forming ability. The supercooled liquid region of as-spun ribbons was enlarged by about 10 K for both Ni60Pd20P 17B3 and Ni65Pd15P 17B3 alloys. The critical diameters for glass formation were increased up to 15 mm for Ni60Pd20P 17B3 and 10 mm for Ni65Pd15P 17B3, respectively. The reason of the minor B addition leading to the significant improvements of thermal stability and glass-forming ability was investigated. © 2009 The Japan Institute of Metals.
