Introduction :Rhizopustypicallyresultsinacute,aggressiveandangioinvasiveinfection,particularlyinimmunosuppressedindividuals.Riskfactorsincludeimmunosuppressioninhaematologicmalignancy,uncontrolledhyperglycemia,ironoverloadstates,andolderchelatoragentssuchasdeferoxamine.CasePresentation:Wedescribeacaseofa33-year-oldfemalewithtransfusion-dependentbetathalassemiawhowasstartedonintravenousdeferipronetherapyandsubsequentlypresentedwitharetropharyngealabscess.Despiteintravenousbroadspectrumantibiotics,shecontinuedtodeteriorateanddevelopedaphasia.ACTscanofherheadshowedmultiplehypodensities.BloodculturesgrewRhizopusspeciesandasubsequenttransesophagealechocardiogramshowedamassintherightatriumwithapatentforamenovale.Conclusion:Althoughdeferiprone,anewerironchelatoragent,hasantifungalpropertiesinvivo,thiscaseillustratesthatangioinvasiveRhizopusinfectionscanoccurinpatientstreatedwithdeferiprone.
