Abstract

The article is an attempt to analyze space and event unfolded during the performance of Saidja, a piece of work by Papermoon Puppet Theatre and Het Volksoperahuis. The article therefore provides a reading of the places where the events happen throughout the performance. The places consist of both places with physical, as well as imaginary boundaries. The study uses spatial analysis theory to investigate the meaning of why this event takes place at each specifi c location on the stage. The advantage of using spatial analysis theory is how it highlights the richness of data, consisting of movements and acts of the actors that create "imaginary boundaries" of a place where an event happened. Saidja performance is based on oral narrative, through the dialogues between actors on stage, and oral reading of a narrative by a narrator. Spatial analysis is applied to read the performance providing possibilities to move beyond the narratives but more to a balance between narrative, movement, and acts. The usage of spatial analysis theory reveals the pattern of the classifi cation places in the performance on each scene as well as the pattern of the classifi cation attaching and detaching the past and the present, which creates a fi ctional but also realistic sensability, and also bridges the events happening on the stage from the beginning to the end.
