Abstract

Context: Low back pain (LBP) is a major public health issue affecting approximately 60 to 80% of the adult population at some point in life. It is highly prevalent among young economically active adults, and presents itself as a set of painful manifestations resulting from dysfunction or changes in lumbar biomechanics. Objective: To analyze the effects of a treatment for chronic LBP based on the principles of Segmental Stabilization (SS) and Back School (BS). Methods: An experimental study was conducted with 25 patients with chronic LBP, of both genders, mean age of 51.2±11.2 years. They were divided in two groups - G1 (SS) and G2 (SS+BS) - and evaluated by the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), the Schober test, measurement of the popliteal angle, and the Roland- Morris Questionnaire. Patients underwent 16 sessions, twice a week, for 8 weeks. Results: Both groups presented improvement in all variables controlled in the study. There was no difference between the groups. Conclusion: The treatment involving principles of SS and BS was beneficial for all patients involved in this study. The BS did not lead to additional benefits for the patients in this group. New studies with more participants and long-term follow-up processes are required to verify the potential benefits of this therapeutic combination, once the BS has a preventive potential.
