Abstract
Since November 1989, the Japanese Red Cross Blood Center initiated HCV screening, using the anti-C 100-3 ELISA test, when donor blood was collected. It is expected that this step will reduce the incidence of post-transfusion hepatitis in this country to approximately 44% of the previous figure. In fact, reports have indicated a dramatic reduction in the incidence of post-transfusion hepatitis. However, shortcomings of the anti-C 100-3 ELISA test have been pointed out. With the introduction of a second generation test, this preventive step will be further strengthend. © 1991, Japanese Society of National Medical Services. All rights reserved.
