Abstract

The aim of this paper is to reflect about the relationships between lexicalization and grammaticalization in the emergence of Spanish verbal periphrases. We will analyse the evolution of three verbal periphrases (venir + a + Infinitive, tener + de + Infinitive, ir + y + verbal finite group) and we will try to demonstrate that there is a first stage that can be defined as lexicalization in its formation, because three different collocations are formed. In a second step, grammaticalization takes place, since these collocations evolve to routinized verbal constructions fully productive specialised in expressing modal and temporal values. In this paper we will follow a usage-based approach to language change, combined with the assumptions of the theory of grammaticalization and with Construction Grammar. We will base our study on data extrated from Consulting the RAE corpora (CREA Y CORDE).
