Abstract

Studies on the evolution of the urban form frequently use methods of analysis in which rigorous and precise graphic representation is revealed as an optimum means in the research process for measuring, comparing and assessing the changes and transformations experienced. The purpose of this research, using the Avenida del Puerto in Valencia as a study model, is to demonstrate the validity of the cartographic coordination method, verifying relationships between the redrawn cartographs of different periods and taking permanences or invariants as support points that ensure comparison throughout the study sequence. It also intends to underline the potential offered by Geographic Information Systems in urban evolution studies, for which the spatial component constitutes a fundamental data. The analysis begins in the 18th century, to focus in greater detail between 1944 and 2004.
