Abstract
The trade flows between the provinces of New Granada depended to a great extent on the navigation of the rivers that the viceroyalty possessed. The Magdalena River was the main route that allowed goods to enter from the Caribbean Coast to the inner provinces and carry local goods to the northern markets. However, some settlements didn’t have access to the river systems and depended on other jurisdictions to trade with the northern ports of the viceroyalty. The main objective of this work is to understand how the ports of Botijas and Pedral, founded next to Lebrija and Sogamoso rivers, worked as connection points between the New Granada’s northeastern region and the provinces of Antioquia and Cartagena.
