Abstract

The article discusses the future of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), which is said to be necessary for the protection and furtherance of Western security and political interests. NATO is assuming security-related missions including counterterrorism, cyber defense and counterpiracy. It explores the past and present role of NATO in different phases including its establishment in 1949, downsizing of the U.S. military presence in Europe, and NATO's expansion of its interests to Europe.
