Abstract
Aristotle not only was the first to develop practical philosophy as an independent discipline, but also pointed out its specific methodological problems and bounds. Such problems are connected with the impossibility of reaching the particular as the specific object of action on the level of theoretical reflection. The correct application of universal norms to the particular circumstances of action therefore remains a task to be solved by the personal agent. Phronesis or "prudence" is the faculty that allows one to cope adequately with this task, i.e. in accordance with the normative standards of virtue.
