PLANNING, IMPLEMENTATION AND EVALUATION OF MATHEMATICAL LITERACY EDUCATION PROVIDED TO SEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS

Abstract

The aim of this study is to reveal the effect of mathematics literacy education given to sev-enth grade students in middle school on students' success in mathematical literacy and to determine whether permanent learning has taken place. The study was carried out on 19 students who went to the seventh grade of a public secondary school in Bursa. Action research method was used in this study. In the research, mathematics literacy training was given to the study group for twelve weeks. Mathematical Literacy Test was applied to study group as pre-test and post-test and after eight months as permanence test. In order to evaluate students' participation in the activities, they were subjected to weekly evaluation after the pre-test. Finally, at the end of the education, students were asked to write a letter to determine their feelings and thoughts about the education process and content analysis was applied to the letters obtained. As a result of the findings, it was observed that mathematics literacy education provided a significant increase in mathematics literacy success levels of seventh grade students. As a result of the permanence test performed eight months later, it was determined that the students had permanent learning. When the attendance to the activities was evaluated, it was determined that the students actively participated in the activities. When the contents of the letters collected from the students were examined under two categories for affective and cognitive learning, it was seen that the students reported positive opinions.
