Abstract

In line with the rapid development of information and communication technology (ICT), the Ministry of Education Malaysia emphasized the use of technology in teaching and learning activities to make learning experiences more meaningful to students. Institutions of higher learning are encouraged to implement blended learning that can be supported by the use of Web 2.0 applications. The purpose of this study is to explore the effectiveness of blended learning through Web 2.0 applications in a public university. The study utilized qualitative data collection techniques such as interviews and focus group discussions. Subjects of the study consisted of two lecturers and six undergraduate students. The study have identified the steps in applying Web 2.0 in blended learning including preparation, recognizing students’ basic knowledge and experience, identifying the level of interactivity, using appropriate assessment strategies, and reflection. Blended learning with the use of Web 2.0 application is effective in increasing the interaction between lecturers and students, increasing student engagement, enhancing student understanding of a topic, creating a fun learning environment, contributing to self-learning, changing students’ attitude and improving their skills in using ICT. Pedagogy, lecturers, students and infrastructure are the four key aspects that determine the sustainability of Web 2.0 applications in blended learning.
