This paper gives a personal and narrative account of three research projects in the fields of sonochemistry, catalytic oxidation, and the immobilization of homogeneous catalysts for enantioselective hydrogenation. The projects were started at different times and in different environments. The emphasis of this account is to describe the situations and factors that influenced the selection of the projects and the way in which we proceeded.
