Abstract

This issue was published to mark the centenaries in 1998 of both the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. It reviews the recent history of tropical medicine, its current challenges and future prospects. Topics covered include: control of malaria, onchocerciasis and Chagas' disease, African trypanosomiasis, schistosomiasis, HIV/AIDS, acute bacterial infections and HIV, dengue vaccines, diarrhoeal diseases, oedematous malnutrition, immunization programmes, cardiovascular diseases, health effects of global environmental change, molecular and cell biology in medical practice in developing countries, and health policy.
