Abstract
Background: The pathology and physiology in geriatrics tend to make them consume more medications that carry a greater risk of experiencing side effects and adverse drug interactions. One of the references to evaluate drug use or prescription in geriatrics is the Beers Criteria, which describe a new type of basic guidelines, a specific guide to the treatment for geriatric population. Objective: This study aimed to determine the percentage of drug use according to the Beers Criteria. Methods: The method used was observational descriptive design in which data was taken retrospectively from the prescriptions for geriatric inpatients. Results: Forty patients (61.0%) out of a total of 65 identified geriatric inpatients experienced a potentially inappropriate drug use based on the Beers Criteria. In 40 patients, 59 drugs were found to meet the Beers Criteria with 5 types of drugs to be avoided based on the recommendation of strong scientific evidence, including 10 items of Digoxin (17.5%) 2 items of Alprazolam (3.5%), and 8 items of Ketorolac (14.0%) all in category 1, 2 items of Tramadol (3.5%) in category 2, and 35 items of Ranitidine (61, 4%) in category 3. Conclusion: The geriatric inpatients in dr. Soekardjo Hospital experienced PIMs (potentially inappropriate medications) according to the Beers Criteria.
