Abstract

Proposes a mathematical model of psychological approach and avoidance, which accounts for behaviors of the organism in psychological space (the open field) or the more abstract space constructed in theoretical procedures. Using the model represented by a dynamic system of simultaneous differential equations, the behavior of the organism can be simulated (e.g., detour behavior in space). An experiment using a problem-solving situation was carried out with a computer-controlled graphic system to test the model. Data from 8 undergraduate students support the model.
