Abstract

The effects of mycorrhizal infection on the production of three viruses in three hosts were examined. In tomato, the multiplication of tomato aucuba mosaic virus was increased and the amount of potato virus × produced depended on the stage of the mycorrhizal development. The amount of extractable arabis mosaic virus from petunia and strawberry plants was greater from mycorrhizal than from non‐mycorrhizal plants. These results are attributed to the higher levels of phosphate contained in mycorrhizal plants, because enhanced virus production could also be achieved in non‐mycorrhizal plants given various levels of soluble phosphate.
