Abstract

This study aims to gain an in-depth understanding of the uses and benefits of descriptive paragraphs and compound sentences in the writing of the novel Bocah Penghalau Kera by Shintha Rosse Kamlet. This research uses a qualitative approach with content analysis method. The technique of recording data using documentation studies with library techniques. Data analysis was carried out by describing the content based on the benefits of descriptive paragraphs and compound sentences in the novel. The results showed the use of descriptive paragraphs with a realistic and impressionistic approach as many as 70 paragraphs. The use of compound sentences in descriptive paragraphs is 46 sentences. The conclusions of this study substantially include the following four sections. (1) The descriptive paragraph in writing the novel Bocah Penghalau Kera by Shintha Rosse Kamlet uses a realistic and impressionistic approach. The two approaches were chosen so that the reader has a realistic, detailed, and genuine experience such as face to face so that a deep impression is obtained through object interpretation. (2) Descriptive paragraphs are useful for describing the place and atmosphere of the story as well as describing the characters. (3) There are several types of compound sentences used in the novel: equivalent, unequal, and mixed. The use of compound sentences is intended so that readers gain an understanding of the use of compound sentences in writing novels. (4) Compound sentences play a role in developing novel writing and explaining topic sentences in paragraphs so that a complete paragraph is built.
